Complimentary

My hubby gives the most interesting compliments. For instance: yesterday I was feeling particularly balloonish and whining about how unattractive I looked. He could have said something cheesy like "you're the most beautiful pregnant woman in the world," but that is soooo not Jon. Instead he looks at me critically and says "nah, you're in like the top 5% of good-looking pregnant women."

Okay so this too is untrue and a complete exaggeration especially when I asked him who else is in this category and he said Jessica Alba and Halle Berry (now there are two women who belong in the top 5%), but it made me smile.

Hours later, however, when I scared myself by catching my reflection in a weird angle mirror (I felt like Joey on Friends during his "that girl ate Monica!" moment of shock), he teased that I looked like an obese troll so apparently there's a lot of leeway in that 5%! :)

He probably dropped the 0 from 50% to make me feel better.

Walkabout

The doctor's appt went well. I had a "gentle" exam that determined that I am still only about a cm dilated, but am more effaced and the uterine or cervix or whatever wall is thinning. All good things I guess. Now I can officially split my time between walking around to get MBP moving and lying down with my feet up to prevent too much swelling. (It's better than it was before anyway.)

The exam was pretty gentle, not much more discomfort than your yearly. It was just the phrasing and the indication that "ungentle" exams are coming that cracked me up. Waiting for the doc was also interesting. The walls in there are paper thin so it's impossible not to eavesdrop. Apparently, there is some scuttle-butt brewing between the women (sounded like staff and doctors). There was a conflict resolution management person in there scolding someone for acting childish and unprofessional. She basically said: things are changing in the office and this person needed to decide if they were willing to make those changes or if they preferred to look for employment elsewhere. Okay then, conflict resolved!

For women only:
Anyway, it gave me something to do as I sat uncomfortably bare-assed on the exam table with that lovely napkin on my lap. I always try to kind of tuck it under my butt cheeks so that I'm not accidentally flashing someone side-cheekage when they open the door, but then it's kind of gaped open on the back so maybe I'm flashing butt crack instead. Anyone else struggle with this? Of course this all occurs after I've hidden my underwear inside my pants. Do I not want them to know that I wear polka-dotted low rise bikinis? Is this somehow too personal of information to share? I would like to just once be brave enough to throw my undies in a heap on the floor right in front of the door. It would probably have to be a decoy pair - like some lacy thong that I would actually never wear. :) But I digress...

Today's walkabout featured window shopping with Mom at the Pembroke Lakes Mall. I don't think I've ever been inside there. It's an okay mall, like a step up from the Broward Mall. It was fun to get out of the house mostly. Plus I drank an Orange Julius - I'm pretty sure I haven't had one of those since elementary school - pretty yummy!

Now it's back to rest and reading. :)

"Blah"ging

I purposefully let several days pass between blogs because my life is so blah! Could it be that anything other than the arrival of MBP seems anticlimactic? Or could it be that being forced to lay at home all day with no one other than the dog and George the Alarm Man to talk to does not provide a lot of interesting blog fodder? I'll give you a brief rundown of my activities and let you decide...

3 for 3
I have read three books in three days. I plan to start number 4 today, but to shake things up I'm not gonna finish it until tomorrow! Not that I don't love to read, but I really miss the Olympics - they provided so much couch-rest entertainment!

Alarm Take 4
George was out again to fix the last (I'll believe it when I see it) of our alarm issues. The most exciting thing was the cops accidentally came out after he inadvertently tripped the alarm. At least we know that part works!

When he left, I teased him:
"What am I going to do now George? I've gotten used to seeing you on a weekly basis."
"Maybe you could make me the baby's Godfather?" he suggested.
Considering he let himself into the house without knocking this last time (the door was unlocked because Jon had just walked in from work), I would say that familiarity at least puts him into consideration.

I Scream 4 Ice Cream
I'm not sure if my cravings are increasing or if I just know that my days of diet cheating are numbered, but I have eaten ice cream after dinner the last two nights. It took a bit of will power not to eat it for breakfast this morning! Don't worry. I had a healthy cereal and a banana.

Sex & the City
Yesterday I finally had to sneak out of the house for some fun so Mom and I hit the cheap theater for a movie. Even at its 2 hour+ cankle-inducing length, it was quite enjoyable. I refuse to leave a movie for a potty break so that was the most uncomfortable part. To make it worse, I had to watch this old guy get up and leave at least three times. I was wishing he could just pee for me while he was out there too.

Okay, you're all caught up now. Today is my doctor's appointment and I'll officially be considered full term, so I'm hoping to get the go ahead to jump up and down, eat spicy foods, and do all those other labor-inducing tasks per the old wives tales!

Slow Motion

I feel like I'm moving and thinking in slow motion lately. My hips no longer have any rotation-ability so when I try to take a step my foot only moves a couple of inches. I even had to tell mom to slow down when we were shopping yesterday because I couldn't keep up (and no offense she moves like a turtle... so what does that make my current pace?... slug-like?).

My brain also seems bogged down like a computer than needs to be defragged. I can't remember anything and am incapable of making decisions (much to the annoyance of those around me).

I think I'm ready, huh? The baby better not be in slow motion - that's all I have to say!

Oh, and in case you didn't hear yet, FL is in the cone for the next potential hurricane, Gustav. Just what we need - a hurricane during my delivery or first days home with a newborn...

36 Week Ultrasound

(Here's the post you've been waiting for gals. I just wanted to do it when I had the time and after we'd talked to all the family in person etc.)

It's STILL a girl! So hah to all those people who adamantly say I'm carrying like I'm having a boy and then give me the doubtful eye when I tell them I'm having a girl. It feels nice to have that final confirmation - "hamburger bun," check. (That's ultrasound tech slang for vagina in case you're having a slow day.)

Here's what we know:
- She's big and already weighing in at 7.2 lbs. If I go full term, she could easily be 8.5 lbs or more. (I blame her weight on the P side. It turns out Jon weighed in at 8.8 lbs and his Grandpa told me all his children were over 8 as well. I was a wee 6.6 lbs, but then I came early.) I feel like this is good news and bad news. Good for her - she won't be so tiny and fragile when she comes out. Good for me - hey more baby weight is less I have to lose. Bad for me - owww!!!!!

- Her head is down, way down. If my cervix hadn't been tight, they said I wouldn't have been leaving for home!

- She has hair (not too surprising since both Jon and I did at birth too).

- She's still a mover and a shaker. She wouldn't hold still or cooperate much for the photos.

- She has spunk. She stuck her tongue out when Jon said she was going to be a feisty one like her mother.

- She can suck. She sucked her thumb (one hand then another) during most of the ultrasound.

Here's what we don't know:
- Her length. The tech forgot to tell us and we were too engrossed in her weight to remember to ask!

- What she looks like. We could never get a good profile or head shot. That's okay, I like the mystery in that respect.

I guess it's just wait and see at this point.

Oly Obs

Here are some random Olympic observations for ya...

- Bra: It's says Brasil on their uniforms but it's always typed or displayed as Brazil. I'm assuming it has something to do with their alphabet versus ours, but why not keep it the same?

- Marco Polo: I've watched a ridiculous amount of Olympics this year so I've seen my fair share of water polo matches and I've noticed something missing from past Olympic coverage... those disturbing underwater crotch shots of all the men treading water! Now this is an Olympic elimination that I support - sorry guys, no offense.

- Bling!: Swimmers are so concerned about slowing themselves down, they wax their entire bodies and shave their heads in some instances etc. The runners look like wannabe rap stars or models in a De Beers advertisement. I'm pretty sure it was the weight of Sanya Richards engagement ring that cost her the gold and silver.

- Oopsey Daisy: So did someone totally grease the USA's batons in the 4 X 100 relays or did we just have a bad case of butter fingers?

- Bad apples: We all know that steroid use runs rampant in sports, but who knew that even the horses were falling victim to the pressure? Apparently there are some shady happenings in those stalls.

- Gotcha!: Ever notice that after a point when Todd Rogers adjusts his sunnies that he always uses a weird finger posturing that makes it appear he is missing his pointer finger? I'm pretty sure I count all ten when he's playing...

- Tighty Whiteys: Do male platform divers use that beauty tape to help keep their speedos in place? They're hitting the water at some 35 mph and yet those little things stay on. I've only seen the smallest of butt crack underwater - impressive.

Babywise

It's been a couple of busy days babywise.

Wednesday night was our makeup baby class, "Baby Talk." This is the one where we had to bring the doll and practice swaddling, diapering etc. There were some interesting characters in this class as well. When we first came in, the lady behind me started talking to me because she saw that I had brought my old Cabbage Patch doll. She was complaining that her baby was crappy (she had just bought one at the store) and she hated it. It was kind of funny. Then she just wouldn't let it go. I bet she made the same comment, or variation there of, for the next twenty minutes! And she wasn't talking to anyone in particular, just talking to the air - whacko! (Also, the guy in front of us played video poker the whole time!)

Yesterday was my weekly doctors appt. I'm officially a "good centimeter" dilated. Not that it means much - it could be three days or still three weeks, but it's fun to have some progress to report. (If baby movement is any indication of the onset of labor it could be soon. She's moving so much these past two days it's as if she's trying to claw her way out!) They would prefer the baby stays in at least another week so I have additional orders to relax and take it easy. (These are the kind of doctors orders one actually wants to receive!)

Today is our final ultrasound and then Jon and I are going out for a date night to celebrate our last days as DINKS (double income no kids). I can still count myself as contributing to double income as my school paychecks don't run out till Sept. :)

Now I must peel my resting butt off the couch and hit the showers. Later gators-

Looney

Looney Tunes
The last couple of days, my cough has intensified (shocker, right?). When I have a rough spell, I see little white stars in my vision for a minute or two afterward. It reminds me of a classic cartoon character who's received a bop on the head!

Looney Names
I noticed in the comments that some of you asked about our "real" name choices. If I told you then Jon would have to kill me (he is determined to keep it a secret until the birth) and that just wouldn't be good for the baby... or me for that matter.

Looney Scoring
I'm watching the gymnastics competition from last night as I lie and type. (I've recently learned the people lie and objects lay rule, I hope I'm using it correctly now - it looks weird to me.) What wacky scoring they've had throughout this whole Olympics. The judges still seem to have their favorites.

Looney Times
The alarm installers are headed out here again today. For those of you keeping count, this will be their 3rd (and hopefully last!) visit. I give them credit for their persistence and willingness to keep coming back until everything is functioning perfect, but every time they come they're late, waiting for equipment or having some difficulty that leads me to wasting my entire day (at least I'm supposed to be home and lying down, I guess.)

Slideshow

Bedrest + gray and rainy day due to Tropical Storm (potential Hurricane) Fay = time to play with the new slideshow feature on Blogger.

I thought it might be nice to use once MBP arrives and I think her every move, expression, and outfit is the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I'm just wondering how it works when you access the blog. Does it slow things down (it doesn't for me)? Is it distracting or annoying? What is your overall impression? :)

Let me know your thoughts as this is just a trial run. Thanks!

Olympic Fever

I've always loved the Olympics. I get this from my Dad. Over the years, he and I have logged a lot of hours watching the games. Tonight, we even watched a little together over the phone. :)

This year, the Olympics have come at the exact right time - they've kept me from being completely bored during my "bedrest." (Which seems to be working by the way. I'm down several pounds, right back on track with my weight gain, and much less swollen.) I've even gotten the opportunity to watch some sports I've never seen before - like handball and some long-distance track event where you occasionally jump hurdles and puddles of water (anyone know the name of this event?). I'm a huge Phelps Phan and have been since Athens so obviously I'm stoked about his performance (sorry Spitz's).

What I haven't had a lot of time for is blogging. When I'm lying down, I need to be on my side so typing is an awkward and slow one-handed operation. Oh well, my lack of blogging will help prepare you all for my busyness after the baby is born. :)

Gotta go - diving is on!

Would You Rather?

Sadly, our company departed yesterday which meant a return to reality for me today (ie pre-washing all the baby clothes and blankets).

It was so much fun having them visit. I especially enjoyed getting to know Sue's daughter. We had a blast hanging out, discussing books, and trying to find additional baby names for consideration. At one point, we played the game Would You Rather? The best dilemma was:

Would you rather name your daughter Brunhilda or find out that you are having a boy?

Now no offense to the male population of the species out there, but finding out that we are having a boy at this juncture (with all the pink elements in nursery room decor and clothing) would be a bit distressing, so I had to say that I would rather name my girl Brunhilda.

I don't think it will be that bad. Hildi is a cute nickname. :)

Absence

Just in case you thought my absence from blogging was due to an early delivery, let me put your mind at ease. MBP is still quite comfortable and present in my belly.

The true reason is that I've been having too much fun with some company that came to visit. When I was growing up, I had the most fantastic babysitter, Sue. She took care of me from toddler age up (all through her high school years). I adored her and she influenced me both athletically (she played tennis, I played tennis) and academically (she was the Valedictorian, I wanted to be the Valedictorian... and I was).

We've always stayed in touch, but we don't get to see each other that often. Which is why it is so wonderful to have her and her family (husband and 3 kids) staying with my Mom. They came to Florida to do the whole Disney World experience and then added a few days to drive down and visit us.

We've been hanging out, watching the Olympics, telling old stories, generally having a blast. Her kids (2 boys and 1 girl ranging from high school to age 5) are fantastic. They are kind, polite, funny, smart, you name it. (I hope MBP makes this good of an impression on people one day.)

I only wish they weren't leaving already tomorrow. :(

Wait/Weight

Wait
So today they are coming to finish the installation on our alarms. It was supposed to be a quick finish, but they arrived at my mom's place at 8:00 am and I am still waiting for them to finish and show up at my place. If I have to feed them dinner again, I'm gonna think it's some sort of conspiracy to eat a free meal. (Though they'd be sadly disappointed tonight as I have nothing prepared and very little groceries - a grilled cheese is probably the best I could muster up.) I'm not sure how they make any money if you break down their fee into an hourly wage...

Thank god for the Olympics. So far I've watched swimming prelims, men's beach volleyball, women's water polo and archery.

Weight
My weight has come down a few pounds, but I am still fairly swollen. My legs are better, but my feet and hands are pretty puffed up. My fingers look like fat little sausages (especially when I first wake up) - attractive!

That's all for now. My life is too boring currently to lend itself to interesting blogging...

Alarming

Alarming #1
Yesterday, Brinks came to install our new alarm system. Our installer is very nice and wanted us to have the updated equipment that was being shipped by UPS that day. Of course the delivery time was late so I ended up spending from about 11 am to 8 pm with the installer. At least 2-3 of those hours were chatting and feeding him a snack and dinner. (Thankfully I had lots of goodies to offer since the fridge was stocked with Book Club leftovers.) We talked about his mom (who passed away), his sisters, and his two adorable daughters. His wife even came over for the last hour to do the paperwork so now I feel like I know the whole family! Unfortunately, it was too late to finish the installation last night so he has to come back on Monday. (He's requested a copy of my manicotti recipe so now I'll have plenty of time to get that ready!)

Alarming #2
I had a six pound water weight gain over two days. My right leg was so swollen yesterday, it was twice the size of my left. I called my doctor's office, but they didn't seem overly concerned (do they ever?). Wherever my right leg would be resting, it would get a huge indentation and then the water would push and fill out around it. It was so grotesque -it kind of looked like a shark had taken a big bite of muscle out of my leg (possibly I watched too much Shark Week?).

I don't have any other signs of preeclampsia so it's probably just pregnancy-related edema. I'm supposed to increase my water intake (which is difficult for me since my water intake has always been huge - I'm basically mainlining the stuff now) and go on mini bed rest. I was down three pounds this morning, so we'll see what the rest of the weekend brings.

What's with the Blog List Feature?

Is anyone else having trouble with their blog list? I know a lot of us upgraded recently to the blog list that shows the title and update for our friend's blogs, but the last two days mine hasn't been working.

Sometimes my blog list isn't there at all. Other times, it looks like the old list with no info and then when I click on your blogs, I get this weird unformatted look and it wants me to subscribe to your feed. (Am I supposed to do this? I thought the subscription list was a different one - at least it is a separate entry in the add a page element section.)

Anyone else having issues? If so, what did you do to correct?

In other news, tonight is my night to host Book Club. We'll eat delicious food and hopefully discuss this month's book, The Red Tent. It sounds like most of us had the chance to read it so hopefully that will lead to some good discussion. :)

On a Mission

After spending the past two days running errands (with dogs in tow as I'm still not ready to leave them alone at home - made it interesting since one person had to stay in the car with them while one person went in the store) and cleaning my house, I am on a mission to finish Breaking Dawn by tomorrow. Should be easy to accomplish as I only have a hundred or so pages left... I'll see you all when I emerge.

Jinx

So we didn't exactly have the perfect ending to our night on Saturday and things have been a bit busy and stressful ever since...

My neighbor Venessa came home about 10:30 pm to discover she had been robbed. Not a lot was taken, but the place was pretty well tossed and it's such a disturbing violation. We waited with her for almost an hour before the police showed up (not exactly the fastest response time!) but they were very nice and compassionate. They dusted for prints etc so they weren't complete Barney Fife's.

We were up till about 1:30 waiting for the police to finish their investigation, making phone calls to cancel Venessa's credit cards, and giving Jon time to clean up the glass, tarp the door and put up hurricane shutters to provide some sort of closure till the repairs could be made. (Venessa stayed with us of course!)

Sunday, she and my mom were able to clean everything up and put everything back in its place. They were even lucky enough to find several things that we had initially thought were stolen. Venessa, being the trouper she is, even moved back in that night.

But the whole experience has left me worried, not for our possessions, but for Rio. I don't know what would happen to her if there was a break in. Would they hurt her? Would she run away through open doors and get lost or hit by a car? I just couldn't take that. (Forget that she's microchipped, no one could catch her unless she wore a flag that said: I don't come when called and only answer to "cheeseball.")

So I've decided to have an alarm installed. I had appointments with a couple of places today to get quotes and I decided to go with Brinks. They're coming on Friday to set everything up. I know this still doesn't guarantee anything for Rio, but hopefully if there is a break in, the alarm will get the crooks out faster and notify me to get home asap. I guess that's all we can do.

Frustrations, "Perplexions" & Perfections

Friday Frustrations
Yesterday, my mom and I attempted to run some errands and check out the new Kohls in Boynton Beach. Although we had a blast and laughed our butts off all day, it was just one of those days where nothing went "right." Especially in the driving department, we were not blessed by the road gods yesterday.

I'll spare you the long version, but we ended up taking the longest route to Boynton Beach possible by way of a couple of planned errand stops, a detour from the turnpike due to an accident, and twice driving the wrong direction: 1) because I didn't know that 441 was west of the turnpike up north (it's east of the turnpike down where I live) and 2) because mom thought my N looked like a W (in all fairness, my handwriting is sloppy to begin with and I was writing directions at 4 in the morning the night before due to insomnia boredom). Anyway, it was great to check out the new Kohls, though they weren't having as many great sales as usual - too close to back to school shopping maybe?

But that's not the perplexing part. I like to read fashion license plates especially the ones that spell things (ala the classic concentration game show). Yesterday there was one that I could just not figure out.

NUDUBYD
new dubbya'd?
new do you something?
nude something?
Is it some texting phrase that I am too old and unhip to recognize...
Can someone please help me? This is still driving me nuts (driving, get it?!).

Perfect Saturday
Today, on the other hand, has been perfection.
- Jon let me sleep in (which he usually does now that I'm preggers) and made me an egg sandwich for breakfast.
- Then he ran to Borders to pick up "Breaking Dawn" which he purchased for a steal with my 40% off coupon and $5 Border Bucks.
- We hung out in the pool.
- Finally, I read the first several chapters of my book with Rio by my side. I even made Jon get evidential proof via a photo:

She may have been a wee bit scared since there was some rain and thunder in the vicinity, but I'm sure that was not the reason for her unusual snuggliness.

- Soon we're off to mom's to eat a dinner that we didn't have to prepare and then who knows? Hopefully the perfect ending to the perfect day awaits...
